``Henkel sells Avon facility

AVON -- The Henkel Corp., the city's largest employer with 650 workers, is being sold to a Phoenix company that will purchase the facility along with Henkel's Duck, Painter's Mate Green and Easy Liner brand of do-it-yourself adhesives and household products.

Innovative Brands Holdings announced the acquisition Monday in a news release saying the sale is expected to close within 60 days.

Innovation Brands is owned by the Phoenix-based private investment firm Najafi Cos. It focuses on acquiring, repositioning and growing solid consumer brands that no longer fit the strategic direction of larger corporations into long-term sustainable assets, the news release said.

"We're thrilled that these established and high-quality brands will join our family of products, and are looking forward to nurturing their growth in the marketplace over the next several years," said Innovative Brands Chief Executive Officer and Najafi Partner, Peter Woog. Henkel's Avon location produces the DIY brands.

The facility on Just Imagine Drive underwent a major expansion less than two years ago that added 229,000 square feet to its existing building ...

Locally, Henkel served as the corporate sponsors to the annual Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival since its inception. For four years, the extravaganza held over a weekend in June has included a parade, arts and crafts show, kids activities, and of course lots of colorful and inventive duct tape creations ...''

NEWS ARTICLE from The Morning Journal, 1-15-08, by SCOT ALLYN, Morning Journal Writer

``AVON -- A Phoenix-based company has announced plans to acquire Avon's Henkel Corp. products -- Duck and Painter's Mate Green tapes and Easy Liner shelf covers -- and its building on Just Imagine Drive [Chester Road].

Innovative Brands Holdings LLC, owned by the Najafi Cos. investment firm, expects to close on the deal in 60 days, according to Jerry Pence, a partner at the Najafi Cos. The Innovative Brands will also acquire Henkel Consumer Adhesive's 568,000-square-foot Avon headquarters as part of the deal. The price of the acquisition was not disclosed.

Of the 660 employees who work at the Henkel facility in Avon, about 350 [660 - 350 = 310 jobs gone] will stay to continue producing the acquired brands, according to Cindy Demers, vice president of corporate communications for Henkel Corp.

The rest will leave to work for Henkel, which will continue to own and market Pritt gluesticks and correction rollers, LocTite thread sealants, LePage glues, Pro-Series construction adhesives and Polyseamseal bath and kitchen sealants, which had been distributed from the Avon location, Demers said ...

Pence said the Henkel brands being acquired will function as sister companies to Innovative's Pert and Sure brands. ''We are quite excited about this,'' he said. Pence said Innovative brands started working on the Henkel acquisition in the latter half of 2007.''

NEWS ARTICLE from The Plain Dealer, 1-15-08, by Frank Bentayou, Plain Dealer Reporter

``Henkel Corp. said Monday [1-14-08] that it is selling its Duck Tape and other well-known adhesive brands as well as its offices and plant in Avon to an Arizona investment company.

Innovative Brands Holdings LLC of Phoenix signed an agreement to buy the facility and the consumer products made or packaged there and expects to close on the deal by mid-March.

Both Henkel and Innovative Brands said they expected no loss of local jobs as a result of the deal. More than 650 now work at the Avon facility. Neither company disclosed the terms of the sale.

Aside from gaining Henkel's familiar Duck brand tape, which workers package in Avon, Innovative will take control of Painter's Mate Green masking tape and Easy Liner shelf-lining product, all brands sold in retail stores.

Henkel is not parting with its industrial and professional sealing products, including the Pritt adhesives, Loctite, LePage (glues and sealants sold widely in Canada) and Poly Seam construction tape brands, according to spokeswoman Cindy Demers in New York. More than 300 Avon employees connected to those products will continue to work for Henkel, whose headquarters is in Duesseldorf, Germany, Demers said. Local management will lease space temporarily in the Avon plant and continue working there "until we find a suitable site to move them to," she said.

Demers said Henkel had no plans to move its remaining local jobs to a location outside the Cleveland area. "We'll probably be looking mostly right around Avon," she said ...

Contacted at his home in Scottsdale, Ariz., Najafi partner Jerry Pence said the Henkel brands "seem an excellent fit with our strategic plan. We're looking for these products that have great brand equity -- large corporations that might not be giving them the attention they need to realize their potential." ...

When Henkel finds a home for the administrative and production staff associated with its industrial adhesive products, Pence said, his company wants to "move toward using that Avon facility fully," perhaps increasing employment beyond the 350 he said will become Innovative employees ...

Henkel bought Manco Inc. and its adhesives brands in 1998. Manco's chief executive, Jack Kahl, had developed the Duck all-purpose tape as an almost iconic brand among America's do-it-yourself home-improvement types.

After Kahl sold Manco, pocketing more than $115 million, he was implicated in an insider-trading case. In 2005, his testimony helped prosecutors convict Ohio State University marketing professor Roger Blackwell of having a role in improper stock trading. Kahl received immunity for testifying.''

``Henkel employees moving to Westlake

AVON -- Henkel Corp. plans to move 100 to 200 employees from Avon to Westlake as part of the company's sell-off of some adhesive brands and a local plant to Innovative Brands Holdings LLC of Phoenix. This week, Westlake planning officials approved a request for renovation of a building at 801 Canterbury Road. Henkel could occupy approximately 30,000 square feet there, said Bob Parry, Westlake's director of planning and economic development.

Company spokeswoman Cindy Demers said that Henkel's Avon employees will be relocating "somewhere in the area" and that the move could take place before the end of the year.

Innovative Brands is buying Duck Tape and other well-known Henkel adhesive brands, along with the Avon facility where the products are made and packaged. Employees who work with those products will stay in Avon ...''

BUSINESS DIARY from The Plain Dealer, 4-2-08

[Henkel sues Najafi]

``Henkel KGaA filed suit to force a unit of Najafi Cos. to complete the $127.5 million buyout of Henkel's consumer-adhesives business. Innovative Brands Holdings agreed to the purchase in December and is unfairly delaying it, Henkel said in a lawsuit made public Tuesday in Delaware Chancery Court in Wilmington, Bloomberg News reported.

Najafi is a Phoenix-based private-equity firm. Henkel, based in Dusseldorf, Germany, makes chemical products. Henkel's lawyers contend Najafi demanded a cut in the tape unit's purchase price.

The Plain Dealer reported March 15 [2008] that Henkel planned to move 100 to 200 employees from Avon to Westlake as part of the sell-off. No details were available Tuesday [4-1-08] on how the lawsuit might affect those plans.''

``Sailing to the land of sticky tape

Avon Duct Tape Festival begins today

AVON -- This year's Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival has something new, a theme.

That's right -- the land of sticky tape is going to be all about pirates this weekend.

Starting tonight, 13 enormous sculptures will dot the festival grounds, including a 5-foot-tall duct tape mermaid and giant treasure chest, parrot and pirate ship parts.

"When I first saw the mermaid, I asked myself if it was a real person," said Sara Huebner, spokeswoman for Henkel Corp., which sponsors the event. "Then I saw the tail and couldn't believe something like this could be made out of sticky tape."

Each statue will have a clue, and treasure hunters can solve each one throughout the weekend to spell out a mystery phrase. There will be prizes for completed "treasure maps" and a grand prize drawing at the end of each night.

More than 40,000 people are expected to attend the festival, which kicks off at 4 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.

High-seas sculptures aren't the only duct tape masterpieces you'll see at the event. There will also be duct tape crafts, duct tape fashions, duct tape games and duct tape parade floats.

"A lot of people don't believe you can do all this with duct tape until they see it," Huebner said.

Henkel will also announce tonight the top 10 finalists in the Stuck at Prom scholarship contest, which challenged high school students to design and wear duct tape outfits to prom.

You can vote for your favorite online until June 29 [2008], and the winner will be announced around July 1, Huebner said.''

``Henkel sells some brands, Avon property

AVON -- A long-time supplier to the Henkel Corp. facility at 32150 Just Imagine Drive has purchased several consumer brands and the Avon property for an undisclosed sum.

Shurtape Technologies LLC, based in Hickory, N.C., closed on the sale May 29, according to Melanie Canning, communications manager for Henkel Corp.

The Avon facility is 750,000 square feet and employs about 450 workers in the areas of marketing, sales and manufacturing operations, and no layoffs are planned as part of the transition, according to Canning.

Stephen Shuford, executive vice president of Shurtape Technologies, said the acquisition was complementary, not redundant.

"Henkel is a long standing and very important customer of ours," Shuford said. "There are no plans to do any workforce reduction. The acquisition brings the existing supply chain under common ownership. We expect really good things to happen in the form of new product opportunities."

Shurtape Technologies, which previously focused on industrial products, now owns the Duck brand of duct tape, Painter's Mate Green brand of masking tape and Easy Liner brand of shelf liner products. The brands will be marketed under a new banner, Shurtech Brands, which was created for the Avon operation, Shuford said.

Shurtech was eager to make the acquisition, Shuford said.

"Because we had a great relationship with them, going back 40 years, it seemed a logical thing to do," he said. "The Avon facility will remain where it is. The fact that we own it doesn't change anything."

Shurtape Technologies is a family-owned, fifth-generation business, Shuford said. Its products are distributed in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Henkel Corp., based in Dusseldorf, Germany, has about 700 employees at facilities in Avon, LaGrange and Mentor, Canning said. About half of them are expected to remain with Henkel and the other half will work for Shurtech, she said. About 100 people at the Avon facility will work in another Henkel location on Cleveland's west side that has not yet been selected, according to Canning.''

NEWS ARTICLE from The Chronicle-Telegram, 6-3-09, by Adam Wright

Henkel sells Avon facility to N.C. firm

``AVON -- Henkel Corp. sold its Duck brand of products and two other major brands to North Carolina-based Shurtape Technologies.

Included in the sale is Henkel's Avon facility off Just Imagine Drive, but the deal is not expected to interrupt production or affect the jobs of 350 people who work at the facility, said Shurtape spokeswoman Melanie Canning.

The new name of the local company will be ShurTech Brands.

The move is an effort for Henkel Corp., headquartered in Germany with branches across the globe, to focus more of its efforts into what Henkel president Julian Colquitt called its "core adhesives businesses," including construction adhesives, sealants and liquid adhesive technologies, Canning said.

The Painter's Mate Green and Easy Liner brands also have been sold to Shurtape, but Henkel will keep the products made under the Pritt, Loctite, LePage, Pro-Series, PL and Polyseamseal brands.

Canning said Henkel is looking for a new building in the west Cleveland suburbs from which to operate. The company also has a facility in Mentor.

The deal between Henkel and Shurtape was a natural fit, according to Shurtape president and CEO Jim Shuford, since the two had been doing business together for the last 40 years ...

Avon Mayor Jim Smith said he does not expect any sponsorship deals between the city and the Duck brand to be affected by the sale, especially since John Kahl will retain his position as chief executive officer for ShurTech Brands.

The company sponsors the Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival as well as participates in a variety of other community activities ...

The Duck brand has been a part of Henkel since 1998, when it purchased Manco, which previously owned the rights to the Duck brand and operated out of the Avon facility.''

``Miss America Coming to Duct Tape Festival

Teresa Scanlan to lead the parade

There she is -- Miss America, and she will be waving to the crowd while serving as the Grand Marshal for the Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival parade next month. Eighteen-year-old, Teresa Scanlan, from Nebraska is the youngest woman to ever take the crown and she also is an avid crafter, often using duct tape in her projects.

Sporting the theme, "Real Fans Stick Together," the eighth annual festival will celebrate fans love of sports and pay tribute to America's favorite fix-all, duct tape.

This Father's Day weekend tradition, June 17-19, features fashions, sculptures and parade floats made out of Avon-based Duck Tape brand duct tape, along with festival fun, food and entertainment.

The theme also rolls out the newest line of duct tape, College Duck Tape brand duct tape, which features the logos, mascots and colors of favorite college teams.

"We are pleased to be bringing Miss America to the festival and have her lead the parade," said Kendra Wheeler, account executive at Liggett Stashower.

The advertising/public relations agency is promoting the event sponsored by ShurTech Brands in Avon.

"When we heard she enjoys crafting things with duct tape we reached out to her and at the time, her schedule wasn't open, but now she is able to participate. She will be sharing her love of crafts during a presentation at the festival Saturday on the main stage."

Festivities kick off Friday, June 17, at Veteran's Memorial Park. Highlights include:

A duct tape scavenger hunt throughout the festival grounds;

An arts and crafts tent where visitors can use duct tape to create their own sports memorabilia, such as pennants, pom poms and megaphones;

A free roll of duct tape to the first 500 attendees each day of the festival.

The premier event during the festival is the parade which this year takes place Saturday, June 18 beginning at Avon High School then traveling down Detroit Road to the park entrance.

Application deadline for the parade is May 25. Participants are encouraged to keep with the sports theme when decorating their floats.

North Ridgeville residents Tim Terrell and Adrian Glover are this year's festival sculptors. Their work with duct tape will be featured throughout the event.

"We are very excited to keep the tradition going on Father's Day weekend and we continue to find ways to make it a little better and more exciting each year," said Wheeler.''

``North Ridgeville residents proud of creation, which represents Avon tape company at the zoo

Although the Avon-based Duck brand duct tape corporation now offers the much-celebrated adhesive with African-inspired animal prints, North Ridgeville residents Tim Terrell ... and Adrian Glover created the 6-foot-tall elephant with the tape's iconic gray. The sculpture is on display at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's new elephant exhibit.

North Ridgeville resident Tim Terrell said he never would have guessed he'd spend his winter months building a 6-foot-tall elephant out of duct tape.

But he rose to the challenge, along with his carpenter friend Adrian Glover, another North Ridgeville resident.

"I was kind of proud of it," Terrell said. "I never really considered myself much of an artist."

The non-artists' sculpture was commissioned to commemorate Duck Brand Duct Tape's partnership with the Cleveland Metroparks.

Their sculpture was on display during the Metroparks Zoo's dedication and grand opening of the new African Elephant Crossing exhibit on May 5 [2011], and there it will stay until the Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival in June.

The men so exceeded expectations, said Patti Sack, a spokeswoman for ShurTech.

The elephant was constructed with over a mile of Duck Tape, wood, chicken wire, recycled newsprint, plywood and urethane foam. It stands 6 feet tall and weighs 300 pounds ... They have been commissioned to create six more sculptures to be showcased during the festival ...''
